One night only, Chef Ian Alvarez of Bara Restaurant will partner with Gohan Society & Kampai to present a 5 course summer tasting menu with shochu pairing. This is our first ever seasonal tasting menu with shochu pairing in what will now become a quarterly event at restaurants around New York (future locations to be announced).
You’re likely familiar with Kampai since you’re here on our site, but Gohan Society is a nonprofit organization devoted to introducing Japanese food to Americans and introducing American chefs to Japan through a travel program.
Therefore, we decided to start our quarterly pairing dinner series with a promising young chef at a new restaurant. At Bara (“rose” in Japanese) Chef Alvarez combines French and Japanese cuisine with skills learned under David Chang’s tutelage at Momofuku Noodle Bar and later honed at French Louie in Brooklyn.
This one night only dinner will include 5 courses featuring seasonal local ingredients paired with 5 shochu drinks curated by shochu expert Stephen Lyman and Bara Beverage Manager Kyle Storm. The dinner will be communal with both individual plating and family style service depending on the course.
The communal table format brings the cultural aspect of shochu into the dinner as shochu is ingrained into the culture of Kyushu Island in rural Japan and serves as a way to bring people together for great food and conversation.
If you want to be part of the event you’ll need to contact Bara Restaurant directly for reservations. A $10 discount will be available to Gohan Society members.
Don’t miss this unique first-time opportunity.
