I was up at 5am to wash 900 kg of sweet potatoes before taking an early morning train (6:42am departure) to Kirishima in northern Kagoshima. Each year the Gohan Society hosts the Aki Matsuri, an autumn festival designed to bring Japanese food and culture together with New York food and culture. This year, on Thursday, October 4th, at the Brooklyn Brewery in Williamsburg, Aki Matsuri 2012 included food samples from 11 restaurants ranging from New American to traditional Japanese. New York Shochu Night Out
The Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) and Japan Sake & Shochu Makers Association (JSS) are co-sponsoring the 1st ever (hopefully annual!) New York Shochu Night Out. This ambitious city-wide shochu tasting takes place on Sunday, February 12th from 6pm to 9pm for dinner guests at three famous NYC izakayas.
